Meaning of “Grapes Upon The Vine” by TV Girl

After now having gone through virtually the entire playlist of TV Girl’s “Grapes Upon the Vine”, the lyrics of this, its title track, are arguably the most confusing on the LP. But taking into consideration the sentiments expressed on the playlist’s previous songs as well as the lyrics of this one, what it appears Brad may be getting at, once again while addressing a romantic interest, is the notion that all of us are the same.

In other words, his way of thinking is such that favor doesn’t really exist, and no one is really better than the next man. Or put otherwise, there isn’t any type of ultimate pleasure or fulfillment in life. And as implied in the second chorus, in those regards he’s speaking directly to the times we live in.

So in context, the phrase “grapes upon a vine”, as rendered in the chorus, reads as a metaphor for people in the world. And as inferred via that choice of symbolism, we are all just cogs in the wheel, in manner of speaking.

So it reads as if what the vocalist is speaking is akin to a sense of permanent depression or melancholy, i.e. one that everyone is suffering from, and therefore no one can overcome it. Or let’s say Brad Petering comes off as the type of person who has concluded that life only offers limited fulfillment.

“There ain’t no check within your mailbox
So don’t go changing with the times
There ain’t no Kool-Aid in your poison anymore
There ain’t no comfort in the bottle
For a grape upon a vine”

As of this writing, there isn’t a lot of verifiable information available about this project. But according to Genius, all of its songs were written by Brad Petering. He’s the frontman of the band, being backed by Wyatt Harmon and Jason Wyman.

And whereas we don’t know which, if any, label backed this endeavor (since TV Girl is an indie act), what has also been revealed is it being copyrighted by an entity known as Blissful Serenity Industries.
