“Flowers” by Miley Cyrus

It is very likely that Miley Cyrus based “Flowers” on her relationship with Liam Hemsworth, the B-list actor whom she was married to from 2018 to 2020. That is to say that the lyrics proceed to imply that the vocalist was in a very-serious relationship with the addressee. This is a relationship in which they were living the “dream that can’t be sold” and proceeded to ‘build a home’ together.

In other words, what’s being implied is that they had an enviable, fairytale-like romance and intended to be together for life, with the intent to start a family and the whole shebang. But what is also suggested in the first verse is that this lofty feeling/ambition didn’t last for long.

The Divorce

When Miley and Liam did go about getting divorced, the prevailing rumor at the time was that she left him. Some of what has been revealed since then would suggest otherwise. But in the pre-chorus, this song does go about reinforcing that notion or at letting it be known, if this piece is in fact about their romance, that Cyrus was not as happy-go-lucky as she may have appeared circa their divorce.

Or as the vocalist puts it, it’s not as if she wanted to part ways with the addressee. But eventually, amidst tears, she felt she was forced to, as Miley concluded that she could – as relayed through the title/chorus – love herself superiorly to the way he was treating her.

Lyrics for Miley Cyrus' "Flowers"

Flowers

In the second verse, we see that Liam did apparently bought her flowers and things of the sort. This infers that he likewise engaged in the other activities listed in the chorus, such as taking her dancing, to the beach, so on and so forth.

Miley puts forth that despite being your average boyfriend, if you will, Liam’s manner of loving her was still insufficient for her emotional needs. And such a statement is not necessarily surprising coming from the likes of Cyrus, who has established herself as being a fiercely-independent woman.

Insufficient Loving?

So conclusively, what the vocalist is relaying is that she was compelled to abandon her relationship with the addressee due to feeling, most simply put, that he wasn’t loving her adequately enough. Or more to the point, she’s convinced that her emotional needs can be more rightfully met without him than with him.

And in closing, it should also be noted that, in all honesty, this isn’t necessarily the easiest or most logical song to make comprehensive sense of. But if anything, it should be noted that this is Miley Cyrus we’re dealing with, not one of those types of women who may, say, prioritize being married over personal happiness.

As presented in this song, her reasons for leaving Liam would be considered fickle by some standards. But obviously, she was not inclined to remain in a marriage whose love she felt was soulless.

Interesting to Note

Miley Cyrus is well known to be reliant on her sexuality as an artist, and accordingly she released some racy media just prior to the release of this track in the name of promoting it. That said, the forthcoming of “Flowers” had been made public at least as early as New Year’s Eve, 2022.

This is a pretty narrow view and doesn’t nearly cover all the facts. She wrote this song because he cheated on her with at least 14 different women, would belittle her, etc. She didn’t leave the marriage due to some fickle, frivolous emotions and feelings. She left because Liam doesn’t know how to be married and cheapened the vows they made to each other by literally violating every single one of them. Facts help.
