“Freaking Me Out” by Ava Max

In “Freaking Me Out”, Ava Max uses the motif of a haunted house to shed light on how she feels about falling in love. The foundation of this metaphor would obviously be her going through some kind of depression or loneliness prior to partaking of this experience. She states that formerly she was a “ghost” but has now found new life via this relationship.

And the way she relates her feelings to a haunted house is by saying that just as being in the latter would ‘freak her out’, as in cause her to panic, so is the fact that she is falling in love. Another way of looking at it is that in her current state, she is alarmed by the fact she cannot keep her emotions in check, like this love she has for another is even more powerful than her self-control.  Indeed in general the singer comes off on this track as the type of person who is not privy to giving her heart to another.

So all things considered this is actually a love song. The singer is smitten by someone. But being in such a state has raised her anxiety, as it is clearly something she is not used to.
