“Go Away” by Tate McRae

“I Used to Think I Could Fly” is, in a way, a concept album. That is to say that the subject matter and sentiments presented throughout are pretty much uniform in nature. And it is actually from a line in this song (“Go Away”) that the title of the project was derived.

“Go Away” is also one of the tracks from the album where Tate’s explanation(s) actually match up to what’s being put forth in the lyrics. Being in love is such that thoughts of the other person incessantly permeate your mind. This becomes an inconvenience though when said individual, who in this case is also the addressee, is a toxic partner. Or as more specifically implied, he wasn’t as committed to the relationship as the vocalist was, and that reality bothered her.

And as you likely already know, Tate recently experienced a major breakthrough, i.e. transitioning from a professional teen dancer to a music career under a major label, with the latter endeavor affording her more visibility and opportunities to make bread. So it’s like, she had every reason to be happy in life. But instead, as stated earlier, her mind was preoccupied with thoughts of her less-than-ideal romance.

Please go away

On some other songs on the album, we find Tate damning her ex. But on this track she takes a more vulnerable approach, rather putting forth her inability to forget about him, as well as expressing a desire that he regards her the same. And as further explained by the songstress, “I Used to Think I Could Fly” is an album that commences with “a very bad b*tch energy” but gradually progresses into revealing “how sensitive” she actually is. “Go Away” is in fact the penultimate track on the album.

So perhaps if it had appeared earlier on in the playlist, the title could be taken literally. But as actually relayed in the song, want McRae is rather expressing is being unable to get the addressee out of her mind, as in he ‘never goes away’.
