“?” by Tate McRae

“?” isn’t a song but rather a terse monologue which serves as the introductory track on Tate McRae’s 2022 album “I Used to Think I Could Fly”. As explained by the entertainer, the wording of this piece is actually composed of a number of voice memos from her phone spliced together.

This is one the tracks on the LP in which Tate more or less explains what the title of the project means, as she also described the concept off the album. And that is, most simply put, the human tendency to be more optimistic in our youth than we are once we actually become experienced in the world.

To note, listeners of the album will be able to ascertain that what it was exactly which negatively affected McRae’s enthusiasm was a heartbreaking romantic relationship(s). But as for the reason why she titled this song with simply a question mark, that is not clear.

This is the only track on “I Used to Think I Could Fly” that was written exclusively by Tate McRae. Its producer is Dave Cook.

Tate has revealed that “?” was birthed while she was on a plane. According to her, during the flight, she was so bored that she started going through the recordings on her phone. It was while listening to the numerous recordings that she stumbled upon a clip (which caught her interest). She later worked on the said clip by putting “a whole bunch of effects on it”. She said it was inspired by the late rapper, Juice WRLD.
