“History of Yesterday” by Milky Chance (ft. Charlotte Cardin)

The title of this song (“History of Yesterday”), in context, is basically a term the vocalists are using to lambast one another. In other words, as implied in the chorus, the two of them have been going around claiming that they’re relationship is the “history of yesterday”.

Whereas that phrase itself is a bit confusing, what it more simply points to is it being a thing of the past, at least based on their words, as far as they are respectively informing their associates.

One of the reasons such claims are perturbing the two parties involved is because they are allegedly intermixed with statements pointing to their romance not having been any good to begin with. Or more simply put the vocalists, portraying the role of exes, are under the impression that the other has been speaking negatively about them behind their back.

But the verses also go on to reveal that this is an on-again/off-again type of situation. Put simply, despite their association obviously being a toxic one, at the end of the day Clemens and Charlotte cannot resist one another. So they are caught up in sort of this unenviable cycle, having found a special someone alright, though the relationship itself being such that they are enemies and lovers.

“Are you saying that we’re history of yesterday?
Now you tell all your friends it was bad anyway
Why don’t you just tell ’em it was
All just a joke, it was never love
I just can’t wait to see you cry”
