“I Like U” by Tove Lo

“I Like U” is, as generally implied by its title, a song of romantic infatuation. But the twist, if you will, is that that addressee, i.e. the apple of Tove Lo’s eye, is, as far as she can tell, already taken. Furthermore, he’s obviously committed to his lady. As such, he is not entertaining Tove’s persistent advances.

But Lo is smitten and therefore refuses to give up. Or as she philosophizes in the outro, “sometimes when you find love, the wrong thing is right”. We will take that to mean, in context, that the vocalist understands that trying to take someone else’s boyfriend isn’t the appropriate thing to do.

But she ultimately concludes by implying that she perceives his current romantic status as more of a challenge to be overcome than her being forbidden from pursuing. Or let’s conclude ourselves by saying that as far as Tove Lo is concerned, the feelings she has for the addressee amount to “real love”. And as such, she doesn’t have any choice but to make her feelings known and hope that the object of her affection will come to feel the same.

“La-la-like you, I la-la-la-like you
La-la-like you, I la-la-la-like you, ooh
What do I do? There’s nobody like you
La-la-like you, I la-la-la-like you, ooh”
