“Sweettalk My Heart” by Tove Lo

Sweet talking is the process by which someone sets out to impress another by bestowing flattering words upon them. This is usually done with the intention of convincing the recipient to do something to the speaker’s benefit in return. And in this track, Tove Lo is addressing someone who is obviously interested in her romantically. And she is strongly advising him to ‘sweet talk her heart’. She basically very much wants to him to transmit complimentary words to encourage her to go that route with him.

And why does she need these sweet words from him? She needs them as a source of inspiration to indeed have a happy relationship with this individual. And she is not making this request from a disposition of naivety.  Indeed she is well aware of the awful things which could potentially transpire in a romance. But at the same time, she is operating under the belief that kind, loving words which are consistently transmitted can overcome such maladies. She actually even perceives such talk, as in idealistic promises that are made, as being “sweeter” than the relationship itself.

So if the addressee truly wants to make Tove his own, then he better get to relaying some lovely speech! And on a general level, we can say that this song is premised on the favorable power of constructive, affectionate sentiments – even if they are not necessarily sincere – being spoken in a relationship.
