“I’m in Love With You” by The 1975

“I’m in Love With You” is a love song with wording that implies that the addressee may be a specific person, as opposed to this piece having general applicability per se. What has been theorized is that the muse that served as inspiration for the song is none other than FKA Twigs, whom Matt Healy only recently broke up with after they dated for over two years.

And by the looks of things they may not have wanted to break up per se but rather, at least as publicly stated, did so in the name of “work commitments”.

But with that theory out of the way, there is nothing in these lyrics that point to any type of discontent between the parties involved. Rather, as implied by the  bridge, this is more of a carefree romance the vocalist is in, one in which he’s hoping not to do anything that’ll end up shooting himself in the foot.

Also, this is one of the rare cases we have come across of late whereas the title of a song is not metaphorical, imbued with a hidden meaning or anything like that. For what the vocalist is doing in this case, after having already built up a relationship with the addressee, is straightforwardly letting her know that he is in fact “in love with” her. And apparently the reason that particular sentiment is repeated over 20 times in the lyrics is because the character Matt is portraying is having a difficult time mustering up the courage to express that sentiment out.  But now that he has finally done so, it is coming out quite forcefully.
