The lyrics of “She Lays Down” is about Matt Healy’s mom, a lady by the name of Denise Welch. More specifically, by her own account she suffered from a harrowing case of post-natal depression after giving birth to Matt and 1989. And upon revealing this to her son, he was so affected by the story that decided to drop a song about it.

Healy’s mum, Denise Welch, is actually a popular British television personality. And whereas the birth of Matt may have affected her back in the day, as aforementioned they later grew quite close regardless.
