“iPad” by The Chainsmokers

According to Drew Taggart, this song was written at a time when he felt particularly lonely and was suffering from a serious case of what he termed as “cognitive dissonance”. However, the narrative put forth in the lyrics isn’t anything deeply psychological. Furthermore, the lyrics don’t even pertain to the subject of loneliness per se.

Rather what we’re dealing with here, most simply put, is the vocalist coming to the hard realization that his romance with the addressee has fallen apart.  And that reality is made partially evident by Drew ‘going through her iPad’ with the purpose of ‘looking for something they used to have’. This thus implies that this union has moved well past its heyday.

There are also lyrical clues pointing to the idea that maybe this is akin to a celebrity romance, i.e. the addressee someone whom Taggart was able to hook up with due to being famous. Or put differently, the addressee comes off as being a bit superficial-minded, someone who for instance is more concerned with her social-media standing than the health of her relationship with the vocalist. And beyond that, the chorus also implies that she’s cheating.

So basically, the vocalist is currently in a state where he’s wondering how this romance degenerated from what at first felt like a teenage love to a point where he and the addressee are “strangers again”. In other words, their bond is completely broken, and he’s in his feelings. So the thesis sentiment is in fact one of heartbreak and disappointment.
