“ISOU” by SHAED

The title of this song, ISOU, is what has been described as SMS language. That means it is an acronym which is commonly used on social media. And in this case what those four letters stand for is ‘I’m so over you’. This phrase is a statement which basically alludes to a person falling out of love.

So by and large we already know what this song is about. And accordingly the track starts off with the narrator giving her boyfriend, i.e. the addressee, clues – if you will – that their relationship has stagnated. Or more specifically, she points out less-than-ideal aspects of their union. Indeed in the midst of such she asks him to ‘give her space’, which is clearly indicative that she is not as into him as she once was.

Second Verse

The second verse reveals that they are still together in a physical sense, in fact even sleeping in the same bed. However, despite being in such close proximity with her lover, the singer still feels as if she ‘spends her nights alone’. Or succinctly put, she is now totally disinterested in him. Moreover as illustrated by the pre-chorus, things have now reached a point where she basically can’t stand him.

Chorus

So in the chorus she gets even more blunt by spelling out the aforementioned acronym directly to this individual, as in she is “so over” this dude. That means that the love or attraction she once had for him is now gone. And with the song ending on that repeated note, the implication is that their romance is now on its deathbed.

What “ISOU” is all about

So in attempting to find a neat classification for “ISOU”, whereas it is clearly based on a romantic relationship it definitely isn’t a love song. That is the singer isn’t expressing any affection for her partner at all. Rather it is more akin to a breakup track, though she never forthrightly states that she wants to break up. Instead she is sending him a message, using the plainest language possible, that she no longer loves him. And once he has concretely received it, then it seems as if she is just going to let the situation run its course.
