“Perfume” by SHAED

The addressee of SHAD’s “Perfume” is a romantic interest of the narrator (Chelsea Lee). And simply put, what she is telling him is that she has chosen to make him her boyfriend. This is of course based on her being attracted to him in the first place. But in the process of getting these points across, she also depicts herself as an independent, mobile type of woman. So now that the opportunity to secure her love is standing before him, she is telling this individual that he has to move expeditiously in order to capitalize. Or the implication is that she may promptly lose interest in entertaining him romantically.

But more to the point is that she is in fact obsessed with this individual. And as such, the title of the song centers on her intent to form a lasting romantic relationship with him. Or as the singer herself colorfully puts it, she intends to “wear” this dude “endlessly” like a perfume she has carefully selected – indeed one she has no intentions of ever ‘washing off’.

All in all…

So we can say that her braggadocio, if you will, is more of a subplot. Or rather let’s say that she makes it plain that she is not desperate. But at the same time it is also quite obvious that she is very much smitten by the addressee. So the dominant sentiment being expressed isn’t her independence or lack of patience but rather her desire to become deeply involved with this individual.
