“Too Much” by SHAED

SHAED’s “Too Much” is centered on the realities of online dating. So to some degree the singer is addressing someone whom she met online via a dating app and has apparently had some type of physically-romantic experience with. And the tune does a good job of capturing intricacies, particularly the psychological ones, that are often part and parcel of these types of arrangements.

First Verse

For instance, in the first verse the singer alludes to the idea that a person deciding to give you a shoutout on such social software often boils down to whether or not said individual likes your profile pic. Indeed the written bios themselves, though oft mandatory, have become by and large irrelevant.

Second Verse

Meanwhile the second verse is centered on the risk factors involved in dating in such a manner. For instance, the fact is that you never truly know who you’re speaking to until you actually meet the person. Indeed the general insinuation is that at the end of the day this is an individual that you don’t truly know. And as such, “there’s no guarantee” as to how the relationship will actually materialize.

Chorus

And that brings us to the chorus. Here the vocalist reveals that the reason she’s compelled to use dating apps in the first place is because there are not eligible partners right before her eyes. And even then, the implication is that there is still an arduous selection process involved with hooking up with somebody online. So now that she has actually found such an individual, she is not privy to just throwing their relationship away even though it may “feel so wrong”.

Or more to the point, her using this software in hooking up with this dude is not in an attempt to find “true love”, as in a spouse. Rather she is just looking for a good time, in a romantic sense. And considering that she has now achieved such, she does not want her joy to be quenched by the ethical questions behind her methodology and decision.

Song’s Title (“Too Much”)

Indeed the title of this song is based on the notion that she has endured loneliness long enough. And now having discovered someone, even if online and a transient partner, she does not want the ideologies of what romance is supposed to be to hamper her joy.

Conclusion

So in a way we can classify “Too Much” as a love song, even if it is not about a partner per se. Also said love may not be particularly romantic but more along the lines of self-love. And why? Because the singer has taken a course of action, as imperfect as it may be, to give her happiness in the moment.  And in the name of experiencing romantic happiness, she has decided to embrace it.

But in trying to isolate the thesis of this tune, that would likely be an idea along the lines of the vocalist having a love/hate relationship with dating apps. She clearly understands that they are not the ideal way of meeting a romantic partner. But at the same time, all things considered, they do serve the important role of hooking people up and if so desired, as is apparently this case, expediting dates.
