“Lessons” by Stormzy
The logical interpretation of Stormzy’s “Lessons” is that it is about Stormzy’s relationship with “Maya” Jama, a model whom, according to some reports, the grime artist dated for a good four years. What is widely known is that the two of them broke up just a few months before this track was released. And it should be noted that the word ‘lesson’ is never actually mentioned in the song. However, all lyrics considered, what it seems that the vocalist has actually learned is that he messed up the perfect romance. For in addition to touting her worth as a partner, he is obviously taking the blame for the relationship between he and Maya failing.
Thus he is apparently asking for her forgiveness. And the implication may be that he’s requesting she give him a second chance also. But overall he doesn’t really come off as if he is trying to get back with her. Rather he wants to make sure that she – and indeed the entire world – understands that despite his shortcomings, he truly values the role that she played in his life. And perhaps even more so than that, he wants to drive the point home that he is sorry in general and to her specifically for not realizing such when she actually in his arms.
