Stormzy’s “Crown” Lyrics Meaning

The main theme of this song is the psychological burden Stormzy must endure due to “wear(ing) the crown”, as in being the current king of the rap game in the United Kingdom. It centers largely on his humble disposition (despite achieving massive success) and desire to help his “people” who are less-fortunate. Indeed such actions sometimes lead to him being negatively criticized.

In the chorus, the narrator expresses that he is basically soul searching in an attempt to answer certain questions concerning his life. Ultimately he acknowledges that with the “little bit of heaven” he has achieved, i.e. his wealth, he must also be prepared to endure some “hell”. Or put differently, “heavy is the head that wears the crown”, as in with him being on top of the game he should also expect some resistance, even internally.

How about a little nod to Shakespeare? “Heavy is the head that wears the crown” is a common expression paraphrased from “Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown” from the play Henry IV, Part 2. This song uses it well as a nod to modern British culture.
