“Let It Die” by Ellie Goulding

The lyrics of “Let It Die” are very metaphorical, to the point that some segments, such as the first verse, are quite difficult to comprehensively make sense of. But based on Ellie Goulding’s explanation of this piece, what we’re dealing with here would be the progression of thoughts the vocalist is going through, whereby she is coming to the hard realization that it would be in her best interest if her relationship with the addressee came to an end.

So the presentation reads for the most part as a soliloquy, and the pre-chorus implies that there is still a part of Ellie that wants to work things out with said addressee, who is presumably a romantic interest. But as for the nature of the actual chorus and second verse, she ultimately concludes that “it’s time to let [this relationship] die”.

And going back to the songstress’s explanation of this song, what the aforementioned conflict is meant to illustrate is how difficult it can actually be to put the nail in the coffin of a toxic relationship with someone you love.

And accordingly, even though the vocalist does come to the aforenoted conclusion, the lyrics never reveal if she went on to muster up the resolve to permanently walk away.
