“Miracle” by Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding

Calvin Harris, the prominent Scottish DJ and Ellie Goulding, a star singer from the UK, already have an established collaboration history prior to the release of “Miracle” on 10 March 2023. The first time they teamed up was a decade ago on a track called “I Need Your Love” (2013), which proved highly-successful.

Shortly thereafter, the pair proceeded to drop “Outside” (2014), which also did extremely well for itself.  Besides that, there are also what appears to be a couple of underground remixes featuring Ellie’s vocals which Calvin has dropped throughout the years, as both artists were staples of the EDM movement of the 2010s.

So in these scenarios it is Harris who serves as producer, as he did on “Miracle”, doing so alongside Burns, another disc jockey from Scotland. Additionally, he and Burns are acknowledged as the writers of this song, as are Ellie Goulding, LostBoy and R.I.Pablo.

The teasing of this track dates back to January, 2023. And to note, “Miracle” has proven successful in that it charted in 20 countries. In the process, it accomplished other notable feats such as topping the UK Dance Chart and Irish Singles Chart. It also became a top-10 hit on the UK Singles Chart proper and Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs ranking stateside.

The Lyrics of “Miracle”

The term “miracle” is one that is largely associated with religion. Apparently, the artists at hand did go about this song in such a manner. For instance, the first time Ellie Goulding is said to have performed it was in a famous English church known as St Bartholomew-the-Great.

Furthermore, there is also an official “Church Version” of “Miracle”. But as generally interpreted, these lyrics don’t have any spiritual connotation per se but rather revolve around the vocalist addressing a romantic interest.

That would be the logical conclusion though still is a matter of interpretation, as the nature of their relationship between the two is never specified. But what the situation reads as if the vocalist “put” the addressee “through hell”, meaning that she has made mistakes in romance which could rationalize him dumping her.

Or another way of theoretically interpreting what’s going down is along the lines of Ellie’s sweetheart discovering that the vocalist’s romantic history is somehow less-than-ideal or perhaps not as she advertised.

So the vocalist entreating the addressee to “believe in a miracle” is basically her way of begging him not to go.  And that would be because, most simply put, she is in love and does not want to lose him.

“Are you too cynical
To believe in a miracle
That just slipped through my hands
But could you take a chance on me?
Can you forgive it all
To believe in a miracle?
Yeah, I put you through hell
But I’m askin’ you to believe
To believe in a miracle”
