“Lie Like This” by Julia Michaels

The lyrics of Julia Michaels’ “Lie Like This” can be deceptively complex. Indeed we already know not to expect anything overly-simple from Michaels. But that being said, what actually seems to be going down here is that the singer is in love with the addressee, and vice versa. Moreover he seems to be the encouraging type. But she rather is having apprehensions about their relationship. 

Indeed it appears she is so nervous, due to no particular fault of her partner, that she is even contemplating fleeing from the romance. However, she cannot do so because, once again, she is in fact in love. And she is made aware of that reality every time they “lie like this”. As such, on this song it appears more than anything that Julia is using the word “lie” within the context of meaning lying down together, not in the sense of being untruthful as one may presume.

In all, Julia is playing the role of someone who is in fact in love yet intimidated by the associated emotions. According to Julia herself, this song explores the numerous spectrums of love.

Writing and Production

This is yet another song that was produced by The Monsters & Strangerz. And the two core members of the group, Stefan and Jordan Johnson, also co-wrote it alongside Michael Pollack. And of course Michaels also contributed writing to it.
