“17” by Julia Michaels

Julia Michaels’ “17” is a song which is premised on Julia fantasizing of a carefree romance between she and her lover. And this “dream” is based on them being “like they (were) 17”. That particular teenage age in the singer’s life was marked by romantic fun and adventure which she more or less wishes to replicate in the present day.

So by implication, the romance she is currently engaged in has its issues, which she alludes to in the song’s chorus. And what are some of these issues? They include lapses in communication, “sleepless nights” and “fights”.

However, the days she is reminiscing on were instead filled with sweet intimacy, partying and drug experimentation, which again were experiences she derived pleasure from. And it is apparent that the same person she experienced those days with is the same one she is presently involved with as she recounts these memories from a joint perspective, as in the two of them sharing them together. And the one thing she obviously misses the most from those days is not the revelry or intoxicants but rather their countless pleasurable intimate adventures.

So simply put, “17” is a song in which the singer is lamenting the fact that the romance with her significant other is not as pleasurable as it was during their teenage years. And she desires for them to reclaim some of that youthful vigor, specifically in the area of intimacy.
