Julia Michaels is a virtuoso songwriter who had established herself in that regard before starting her own career as a pop singer. And with that mind, there is a singular line – “I keep falling for boys and mistaking them for men” – which more or less tells the entire story of this song.
Or more specifically, Julia is lamenting the fact that the types of guys she is naturally attracted to are the same ones who tend to mistreat her. She presents them for the most part as being immature. And even when she does pledge to developing them, once they have reached the desired state (with her help), they abandon her. But on a macrocosmic level she also criticizes men in general. And in that regard she is saying that they are “afraid of commitment” and “super unstable”, which once again alludes to a lack of maturity.
So the singer finds herself in the unenviable position of being caught up in a singles’ market which is dominated by exploitative and mercurial guys. And even more-alarmingly, the particular types she is attracted to also fit into this mold.
