“Me Myself & I” by 5 Seconds of Summer
According to vocalist Luke Hemmings, “Me Myself & I” is premised on a concept that some people may refer to as rugged individualism. That, most simply put, is when a person thinks that he or she can do everything on their own. And that is the type of character that the vocalist possesses.
But even beyond that, as illustrated in the chorus, he’s akin to a “selfish” person. And that is where we get the title from, as in the mind of this individual everything is about himself.
But of course such a modus operandi is not ideal, especially in terms of perpetuating interpersonal relationships. So in the verse, it is revealed that this same tendency on the part of the vocalist leads to him, excuse his French, ‘f—ing up’ associations “without a good reason” – and then being in his feelings by the time all is said and destroyed. For instance, as implied, when a loved one calls, he may opt not to pick up the phone. And you know, you can’t always take for granted that the person will call back, as people get tired of that type of behavior after a while.
Again, such mannerisms on his part would apparently be something which, at this point, he can’t necessarily control, i.e. being attributable to his aforementioned egocentricity.
So at the end of the day, as self-absorbed as the vocalist may be, at least he’s able to recognize that he has a problem.
Release of “Me Myself & I”
5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) has been pretty active in 2022, with “Me Myself & I”, which came out on 11 May via BMG, being their third single of the year. This track along with the two previous ones, “Complete Mess” and “Take My Hand“, is part of 5SOS’ fifth studio album.
