“Older” by 5 Seconds of Summer (ft. Sierra Deaton)
By this point, it’s safe to say that 5 Seconds of Summer have a thing for dropping tracks with aged-based themes. And whereas that is slightly the case with this outing, don’t be fooled by the title, as “Older” is by and large a love song.
Its thesis sentiment is pretty straightforward, even if relayed in a somewhat-unorthodox way, i.e. the vocalist asserting that s/he doesn’t want to age without the addressee, or let’s say co-vocalist, by his or her side. For in this particular case the two singers at hand, Luke Hemmings and Sierra Deaton, are in fact lovers and have apparently been working on this piece since 2019.
And there are various, let’s say intricate metaphors being tossed about which, when you consider the abovementioned fact, likely speak to peculiarities in their relationship. But such musings aren’t such that they deprive the song of a general applicability per se. And underneath all of the metaphors, once again this is a standard love song, i.e. one in which the vocalists, as idealized, intend to stay together for life.

Two of the members of 5SOS – Luke Hemmings and Michael Clifford – are credited for writing this song with Sierra Deaton and Michael Pollack. And it is also Clifford, the band’s lead guitarist, who produced this track.
The Collaboration
Sierra may be a name you heard before. She is one half of the musical duo Alex & Sierra. Sierra emerged victorious from the third season of The X Factor US in 2013. Since then, her discography has been most notably associated with 5 Seconds of Summer and frontman Luke Hemmings in particular, as the two of them have been dating since 2018 and apparently are on the verge of getting married. However, “Older” is her first proper collaboration with 5SOS as a co-headliner.
In an Instagram post, Sierra referred to this song as one of the most special records that she has ever worked on. According to her, she and her boyfriend (Luke) began working on it their living room as far back as early 2019.
The Relationship between Sierra Deaton and Luke Hemmings
As noted, Sierra first made a name for herself as a member of Alex & Sierra. At that time she was dating her bandmate, one Alex Kinsley. However, after being together for some time, they broke up in 2017.
The following year Deaton, who is an American, hooked up with Australian singer Luke Hemmings. Around that time, Luke had also parted ways with a social-media personality named Arzaylea Rodriguez, whom he had been dating. And from them up until now, the relationship between Sierra and Luke has obviously been progressing. For instance, the pair appears to have no qualms about publicizing their romance and even proceeded to become formally engaged during the summer of 2021. However, by the looks of things even now, over a year later, they have yet to officially announce a marriage date, though obviously, as implied by the song “Older”, their relationship is still going strong.
