Meaning of “Heart to Heart” by Mac DeMarco

This song serves as an ode to the friendship that existed between Mac DeMarco and Mac Miller.

The latter passed away in 2018, about six months before this track was released, at the age of 22. And the reason the bond between the two is especially notable is because, just to be totally honest, Miller enjoyed a higher tier of celebrity than DeMarco.

So that would imply, given how close they were able to become in just the year before the late Mac’s death, that their bond was indeed genuine.

DeMarco actually points that out in the first verse, that he “had a late arrival” into Miller’s life. In other words, they weren’t lifelong friends. But as the thesis sentiment clearly relays, they were “heart to heart”, i.e. “walking parallels” in their own respective ways.

And giving this piece an added sense of authenticity is the fact that, unlike most bereavement songs, it doesn’t harp on a feeling of lost on behalf of the party who’s still around. Instead, DeMarco’s goal seems to be emphasizing how similar he and Miller were internally, thus connoting that they were indeed soul brothers, if you will.

“To all the days we were together
To all the time we were apart
Of each other’s lives, heart to heart”
