Meaning of “Out of Love” by Alessia Cara
As the title of this track somewhat insinuates, “Out of Love” is centered on the painful dissolution of a romantic relationship, particularly from the viewpoint of an individual who has apparently been dumped. And although Alessia Cara sings it from a first-person perspective, it is not based on her own personal experiences but rather that of a friend who actually went through something similar and entreated Alessia to write a song about it.
The beginning of the song finds Alessia admitting that she misses her boo. However, she is reluctant to express these sentiments to him as she feels such would ultimately be in vain. Indeed in the choruses we can see that she feels powerless in regards to reestablishing the romance. Because of that, instead of pleading with him to come back, the more-pressing concern in her mind is answering the question of when did he actually lose interest in the first place.
And throughout the rest of the song, Alessia follows along this same fatalist line of thought. In other words, she is obviously devastated by the breakup and still in love with her ex. Yet she is not begging him to reestablish a presence in her life. Nor does she seem particularly concerned with gaining insight as to why he decided to leave. Rather she wants to know at what point in time did this life-altering change in his disposition come about.

I heard this song for the first time in February 2019. I was heartbroken from a breakup the month before and this song hit me so hard because it fit my situation so much. My boyfriend of 2 years and half broke up with me after admitting he lost all feelings for me, but not before cheating on me. It was so devastating and it was insane to see a song fit my situation to well. Maybe I am biased, but this has to be one of the saddest songs I have ver heard.
I can’t believe how strongly this song hit me. I used to be so close to this guy and even though we weren’t officially dating, we had such a strong connection and I was sure we would date eventually. We talked every day, shared our deepest fears, and when we were in a group he would put his hand on my back and rub small circles on back with his thumb just because. I’d never been so happy in my life and I’d never felt so strongly about someone and I was sure he felt the same. But one day out of nowhere he stopped talking to me and essentially vanished. I’d never felt so hurt or lost. All I could think was what did I do wrong. It hurt so much that even 1.5 years later I still think about him sometimes and wonder what I did. This song encapsulates all that pain that I felt
I had a similar situation. At first I listened to this song in the beginning of 2021 but I was in happy relationship but I liked the meaning of the lyrics. It wasn’t until Jan 30 of this year. My boyfriend broke up with me bc he lost feelings. This song came on and I started bursting tears and singing rlly loud the song too. I’m sorry this happened to you but I hope you’re in a better place :). As for me I’m recovering from my actual first love that broke up with me on Jan 30 but I’ll continue fighting 🙂 ☺️
