“Here” by Alessia Cara

With what can be described as an introvert’s party anthem, Alessia explores her thoughts and emotions while attending a social gathering she is not enjoying.

Although, it may seem as though the singer is an irritable person or that there is something going wrong at the party, she admits that it is far from that by first apologizing. In the opening verse, it appears she is being wooed by a guy at a party. Her choice of words indicate her lack of interest in this guy’s attempts and she admits that she probably should have never attended the event in the first place.

The descriptions the singer gives fit that of an introverted personality who is more comfortable being alone at home, than staying in an environment with a lot of people who are not close to her. In the chorus, she questions why she followed her friends to this party while wishing that she could disappear easily. The interesting thing is that without the opinion of anyone, she knows she doesn’t belong in that environment and is coming off as anti-social in the eyes of the other attendees.

Alessia revealed to The FADER that song is dedicated to every awkward, miserable and anti-social party goer in the world. According to her, she wrote the song after attending a party and realizing that she hated it as well as all other parties she had been to.
