In a tweet, Cara shed more light on the meaning of “Trust My Lonely”. According to her, the lyrics are about our inherent instinct to want to cling “onto things that aren’t good for us” because we are afraid of living without them.

In the tweet, she cited bad friendships and toxic relationships as some of the negative things that we cling onto. But according to her, hers was neither of the two. What was it then? According to her, she spent a whole lot of time clinging to “internal black clouds and voices of doubt”.

She later told Billboard magazine that the song was inspired by her own insecurities.
