Meaning of “Vox Populi” by Thirty Seconds to Mars

To begin with, the title of this track is a Latin phrase which translates to English as “the voice of the people”.  This is perhaps partially due to the fact that an actual group of Thirty Seconds to Mars’ fans participated in the creation of the song.

However, a more-likely explanation for the title is that within the lyrics of the track, we find that “this is a battle song.”  In other words, “the voice of the people” is actually a battle cry. It therefore comes to us as no surprise that the alternative title of this song is “A Call to Arms”.

That said, this is not a war song along the veins of inciting listeners to respond violently. Rather it seems to be leading the audience towards a sentiment of optimism in their quest for freedom while simultaneously acknowledging some of the negative ambitions of an individual’s personality.

Some parts of the song read like an actual preparation for battle. And as the title implies, these sections have 30 Seconds to Mars espousing group rather than individual activity. But again, the enemies being confronted are likely internal rather than interpersonal.

This song also references a place “far, far away” that existed “long, long ago”, amongst other characteristics. This seems like a symbolic rather than literal reference. But an actual reference to what or where is unclear.
