“My Body” by LP

This is a relatively complex piece compared to the other tracks we have been introduced to thus far on the playlist of Churches leading up to “My Body”. As with the songs that preceded it, this one is also based on a romantic theme.

But what it is more pointedly centered on, excuse our French, is the singer being super aroused in the aftermath of a breakup, i.e. having no lover in her life. And for the most part, it reads as if the intended addressee is her ex. But where the relative complexity referenced earlier comes into play is that during certain parts of the song, it can also be argued that she is addressing someone else, i.e. another potential lover. But either way, the vocalist has gotten to the point where she is ‘tired of doing it by herself’ and needs, most simply put, a sex partner in her life.

And judging by the second verse, LP is now so desperate that she’s willing to get back with her ex, even while simultaneously acknowledging that doing so would be less than ideal, considering that said ex ‘left her for nobody’ and all. Moreover, this narrative is set during a time of year whereas, on top of being generally randy, the vocalist needs someone by her side. So basically what she is expressing is a willingness to take her ex back due solely to sexual reasons.

So again, this is a song of desire. LP possesses a physical body, and accordingly one of her “needs [is] to be loved” in a fleshly kinda way. And perhaps immediately after breaking up with her ex, the idea of practicing abstinence in the meantime seemed doable. But as time progressed, it’s as if now lust – for lack of a better word – has taken over.
