“Rainbow” by LP

Considering that every song on the playlist of “Churches” thus far has been romantic in nature, then it’s safe to assume that such is also the case with “Rainbow”. And let’s just say that “Churches” definitely isn’t a concept album, as LP has apparently tasked herself with exploring the entire spectrum of romance, i.e. respectively portraying a lover in different types of situations. 

For instance, on “The One That You Love”, the track preceding “Rainbow” on the playlist, the narrator is being victimized by an unrequited love. However, in this case it seems the scenario has been flipped, and it is rather the addressee who appears to be on the receiving end of a toxic partnership.

But that said, it should be noted that who’s at fault for this relationship being on the decline is sorta beside the point. Yes, about midway through the vocalist does imply that she is primarily to blame, seemingly due to possessing dishonesty issues. 

But it doesn’t seem as if the addressee is trying to dump her, nor does LP want to bounce from this relationship. But in any event, she is clearly pessimistic as far as the future of this union is concerned. 

And that is what the title is meant to in part to allude to, i.e. the vocalist questioning whether or not this relationship should continue. Or more specifically, the term “rainbow” symbolically harps back to the happier days in this romance. 

And conclusively, LP is convinced that said “rainbow” can be recaptured if she and her partner endure. So reading in between the lines, it’s basically as if the vocalist is entreating the addressee not to lose faith in their relationship.
