“Only the Brave” by Louis Tomlinson

“Only the Brave” is a very-metaphorical offering from Louis Tomlinson. But despite all of the religious and astrological references, at the end of the day it seems that Tomlinson is putting two ideas forth in relation to the track’s title.  One is that an individual must be “brave” to venture into the field of romance. And in that regard, the singer seems to acknowledge the high potential of hearts, including his own, being broken in the name of love. But secondly, it can also be argued that, in light of such, he has made a decision to live “solo”.

You can view the lyrics, alternate interprations and sheet music for Louis Tomlinson's Only the Brave at Lyrics.org.

And that type of lifestyle also (where he has consciously decided not to give his heart over to romance) is something which “only the brave” dare attempt.

So needless to say, this song is pretty complex despite being the shortest on Louis’s “Walls” album. And cohesively the narrator seems to understand that, at least for the time being, even if he has met a lady who makes his heart jump, i.e. the addressee, he is not keen on falling in love.

Lyrics of "Only the Brave"

Did Tomlinson write “Only the Brave”?

Yes. Tomlinson wrote this song along with others. They are Duck Blackwell and Andrew Jackson. And the way Louis tells it, Blackwell and Jackson originally conceptualized this song to be recited by Liam Gallagher of Oasis fame.

Jackson and Blackwell are also the official producers of “Only the Brave”.

Release Date

This track came out on 31 January 2020 as part of Tomlinson’s maiden album, “Walls”.

Was “Only the Brave” issued as a single?

No. In all, the album “Walls” was supported by five singles. Among them include: “Kill My Mind” and “Two of Us“.

Maybe it’s because he loves Harry and he knows he can never fully love anyone else. Harry is a habit that he has a hard time breaking . He’s decided on living a more normal life with his girlfriend but can’t fully commit to her because of all he feels for his band mate. There’s too much hurt between them, though, to ever be together fully. He grapples with love and chooses to go solo. He’s had to learn to be fine on his own without Harry as a crutch.

Still though Louis has already shut down rumors of larry and i think it is very disrespectful to harry and louis and their gfs. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying thats being gay is a bad thing in fact I support the lgbtq + community and so does louis but what i’m saying is that it is disrespectful and the fact that it IS NOT a dead ship is horrible. Literally my youtube page is full of Larry videos. Also, you have no rights to jump in his love life and make stupid conclusions about it. It is an invasion of privacy.

im not trying to come of as rude but whenever they are asked about larry there is endless stuttering and there are iphone conspiracies and stuff like that they never told “larry is not real” or “larry is some bullshit that the fans have made” instead they say “If you Google ‘conspiracy’ on iPhones, you’re going to get a conspiracy. So it’s one of these things that people love to buy into, but in reality obviously there’s no truth to it. Obviously” with exggerated eyes but i also agree with the “stop making everything about larry” because its true somtimes its annoying af but larry is real

I’m sorry but larry will NEVER be a dead ship. There is still PILES of stuff from them in 2021, and Larry has only gotten more real. People do stan him for his music, but the thing is, we all also recognize that him and harry have some cHemIsTrY, but oBviOUsLy some of you chose to deny it. You can’t say that Larry wasn’t real at some point, because they have said MULTIPLE times it is/was. I suggest you look at finline and walls, and the lyrics and you will change your mind. Don’t be so narrowminded.

      • Directioner says:

Wtf are you even talking don’t even interfere in between larries. That’s a f**king real ship and louis wrote this for his H.

        • Anonymous says:

Yk that otb is NOT a romance song (along with 80% of Walls), right?? Only the Brave is about being brave when it comes to love. Specifically LGBTQ+ love. It‘s about not wanting to be gay. (Pour mercy, mercy on me).
ALSO Louis could be part of the LGBTQ+ community WITHOUT being in love with Harry. PLEASE get a life.

          • Larryisreal says:

I think it would just be stupid to say that Larry isint real because there is just so much proof and btw 99% of larries stan them for their music and just want them to be happy and the only way they can be really happy again is if they could be together

  2. Yvette says:

Why would Louis choose to have this song as the final song on his album? It’s a big statement saying love is a solo song and only for the brave. It’s as if he’s saying only love if you’re willing to get hurt but also it’s a solo song and he never cared for love. It’s too hard to put yourself out there because of past disappointments and loss. In other songs he wants to be loved. To me he sounds like a very confused boy who took on being a man at a very early age and there’s resentment behind that. Harry was a habit for him. There is NO doubt in my mind. Whether it was romantic is up for debate . Harry has that affect on many people… just as Michael Jackson did . People fall in love with his personality and can’t help that overwhelming feeling of being out of control. Eleanor , his girlfriend, seems like a person who keeps him grounded but it’s Harry who drives him to be better as an artist. He will always need Harry to be in front of him to lead the way, even though he is slowly becoming his own person. In interviews, Louis often was indecisive in his answers and waited for the others to give their answers first. Perhaps it made him feel some control to make up for his lack of confidence. He is now much braver and standing his ground, just as he did with executives to protect the band and now his solo career direction. That’s my take as wrong as others may think I might be. It’s psychology not Larry shipping.

    • Lewt says:

Couldn’t put it better myself. Why would a heterosexual couple have to be brave about love? they have nothing to be afraid of.

      • Anna.Ellene says:

@Lewt I see what you’re saying, but I have to disagree. No matter what your sexual orientation is, loving someone will always be a battle of emotions and external struggle. Of course people in lgbtq+ relationships have faced a long history of discrimination, and are still facing that to this day. But saying that people in heterosexual relationships have nothing to be brave about is untrue. I myself am bisexual and can personally vouch for the fact that both hetero and homosexual relationships are difficult and require effort and bravery. In regards to the whole “is this song about larry” debate, I think it could go either way. Don’t immediately assume that because this song is about bravery in a relationship that this song isn’t about Eleanor. She has had to deal with a lot of hate, and even threats, because of her relationship with Louis. And I’m sure it’s required a lot of bravery from both of them to endure that. I don’t want to disrespect anyone who believes that Harry and Louis were/are in a relationship, I’m just sharing what I think.

This is a very interesting description and makes a lot of sense. I’m a fan of Louis, I love his music and personality but I have noticed that a few of his songs and descriptions are all over the place and everyone in the comments are constantly referring to Larry even when it doesn’t make sense. I think some of them are most likely referring to Harry but some are referring to someone else (possibly Eleanor). It’s nice to hear a different analysis of his album though.

  3. Riley says:

I think this song is about louis’ sexuality.
“if the truth tell, darling you fell like there ain’t enough dying starts in your sky” here I think that louis talks to himself , if the truth about his sexuality tell he’ll get a lot of hate and fall because he can’t handle it anymore- he has enough “dying starts” (pain, grief) in his life and he doesn’t need more and he never cared for love.
“it’s a tall tale and it’s only hello, hello, no , goodbye” means that technically it’s a short story, but emotionally it’s a long story .
“i’ll fall upon my knees” (proposing to someone)
“and they’ll say I told you so come on when you know you know” I know that harry said it once but I highly doubt that louis was quoting harry. (don’t get me wrong i’m larrie but I think that THIS song it not about anyone besides louis) ’cause this is a very known quote and there’s a chance that is just coincidence (but maybe i’m wrong this is just a theory) .

    • Anonymous says:

tall tale means, exagerated story, so, maybe he’s saying that it (I don’t know what “it” is) is an exaggerated story with a beginning but no end.

      • Anonymous says:

maybe it means that the beginning was long when he first met harry and had feeling but once the band broke up they never really could get an end or final answer it just sat never ending but going nowhere…??

    • Anonymous says:

To be honest, I think that Larry WAS real but isn’t anymore. All of the rumors and Larry conspiracies are most likely the thing that left a dent in their friendship.
Also, don’t you ever do stupid stuff which may be considered gay or not so straight with your friends?
i once read something saying “if you can’t act gah around your friends, are you really straight?”
      I think it’s true.
This was over four years ago.
Louis now has his own family, a child, and a wife and I think that even though Larry is one of the best things to ever happen to us Directioners, I think that it’s time we let it go.
I’m not homophobic, I just hate to see a friendship as close as brotherhood disappear like that. It’s heartbreaking.

Hi, I am not trying to force a belief on you or anything but just wanted to put this out there and maybe you have something to consider 🙂

First of all; If Larry was real in 1D then Eleanor was a beard. Why would Louis still be “dating” her if she was once a beard? I mean he probably didn’t all of a sudden decide to date someone who has been part of his closeting process.

Second of all; Their relationship isn’t ruined (whether you choose to believe it’s a friendly or romantic relationship). If you connect the dots you can figure out that they have been at each other’s concerts and been hanging out.
I am personally convinced that it’s a romantic relationship mainly because of their discographies and many other things but of course I don’t know them personally and I don’t know their situation 🙂

        Have a great day!!

  4. Alissa says:

The line “it’s a tall tale and it’s only hello, hello, no , goodbye” could mean that his love story (possibly with harry) had to be cut short. “hello, hello” was the relationship, “no” was management saying he couldn’t be with harry and then “goodbye” is him having to leave harry as he mentioned in his other songs like ‘Too Young’ where he says “oh I can’t believe I gave into the pressure, when they said a love like this would never last, so I cut you off cause I didn’t know no better” and in ‘Always You’ he says “Should’ve never let you go” which insinuates that he had to let harry go because of management or even just because he was scared and wasn’t brave enough at the time to face his sexuality or face management or face judgement from others.

Lmao. You Larries are so interesting. C’mon! Stop this sh*t now. He never said anything about this song & what its about particularly. Believe me, Its getting super annoying now. You all are bringing Larry in everything. For ffs, he has a life other than Larry stuff. He has a child. He has a girlfriend. Stop this please because its not really right what you are doing. How is it right for you to label his sexuality and assume things about him when he even denied it himself? Who are you to say that he literally had a relationship with his band member. Dude! He lost his mother he lost his sister. He has a life other than this all s**t you are saying here. He has a whole family to look after. And now, he is free from the management (as you all say that because of them he didn’t come out). I will definitely support him if he is lgbtq+. But at least jus have a respect for him. For his private life. Why you all are so much into their private lives? Why does it matter to you what his sexual orientation is? Just imagine, what if he had no romantic relationship with Harry? How he will feel about it? He has said many times that many people have ruined his friendship with Harry. Don’t you all think that we have gone too far? Bringing his sexuality in everything? Even though he don’t even want it? Why we can’t jus support them for their music? They all are very nice and kind people.

I agree with you completely. Whether or not he is gay doesn’t even matter at this point. I’ve been watching his world tour shows and everytime he sings Only the Brave, the entire crowd pulls out their lgbtq+ flags. And Louis never acknowledges them. It just feels a little awkward to be forcing something on someone who may not appreciate it. I don’t know what to believe about their relationship right now, although I have no doubt that they once did share a romance, but I just feel so bad for him sometimes. Even if they are still together, which is always plausible, then they’re keeping it to themselves for a reason. I don’t like how everyone is always taking something so deep and personal to him and talking so loudly about it. If Louis himself was overtly homosexual like Harry, waving lgbtq+ flags and coming out for him fans and wearing whatever he wants, fuck gender norms, then I would support you guys. But this feels excessive and unwanted. Just my opinion. I wish everyone wouldn’t make him embarrassed like that everywhere he goes. I wish they would give him the space he deserves.

      • Anonymous says:

umm no bestie you got it all wrong
        1) the things about louies taking out pride flags during otb
they don’t do it cuz they think louis is gay. they do it cuz they feel safe enough inside that concert hall to express themselves. many people are closeted and don’t feel safe enough to come out. but louis has created a space for his fans where they can be their true self. and otb means so much to a lot of us. so just because we wave pride flags doesn’t mean we are forcing something on louis.
        2) about louis never acknowledging them….like seriously?? have you seen the smile and proudness he has while singing otb. he even said that this fanbase makes him feel safe RIGHT AFTER SINGING OTB. it says a lot
        3) wtf is overly homosexual??? waving pride flag or/and coming out is a HUGE deal.
        4) “wearing whatever he wants” love, he DOES wear whatever he wants. being gay doesn’t mean wearing “feminine” clothes. dressing a particular way doesn’t reveal one’s sexuality. it’s just plain seterotyping
5)lmao what embarrassed are you talking about??????? do you srsly think that louis would be embarrassed????

  7. Anonymous says:

This is my take on the song
[DISCLAIMER: I am a Larrie, and if you’re not, then this description might offend you, so please don’t read]

    “Pour mercy, mercy on me
    Set fire to history”
Louis is begging for mercy, and for Harry to forget all the mistakes he has made in the past towards him.
    “I’m breaking my own rules
    I’m crying like a fool”
Lousi promised himself that he would stay strong, but now he’s unable to stop crying, probably thinking about how much he has hurt Harry, by letting him go just because management asked him to.
    “Tall stories on the page
    Short glories on the fade”
People are exaggerating and publicizing Elounor, which they believe to be a true long-term relationship, and they are forgetting Larry, which they thought to be a brief fling, but was actually far more meaningful and glorious than Elounor ever was.
“I’ve been close enough to touch
But I never cared for love”
Louis had actually found his soulmate right next to him in Harry, but he did not realize it at the time, because he did not believe in the concept of true love and so he did not care.
“It’s a church of burnt romances
And I’m too far gone to pray”
He realizes that there are a lot of people like him who have been forced to let go of their relationships with their true soulmates due to pressures of society and so on. And he thinks he has messed up too much to even hope and pray that everything will be fine.
    “It’s a solo song
And it’s only for the brave”
Love is something that you have to handle on your own; no one else can help you to face the consequences. And the kind of love that Louis talks about is meant only for those who are brave enough to deal with the struggles.
“If the truth tell, darling, you fell
Like there ain’t enough dying stars in your sky”
Louis has finally realized how much he actually hurt Harry, who had already faced a lot of hardships and struggles in life, even before he came along and hurt him even more.
    “It’s a tall tale, and it’s only
    Hello, hello, no goodbye”
Larry became such a huge story that management forced Louis to get with Eleanor. He could not even properly say goodbye to Harry, and instead had to leave him heartbroken, and without even closure.
    “Pour mercy, mercy on me
    I’ll fall upon my knees”
Louis once again begs for forgiveness, telling Harry that he will even get down on his knees in front of him, to show him how sorry he is about everything.
“And they’ll say, “I told you so
Come on, when you know, you know” ”
Everyone around Louis always keeps saying that his relationship with Harry will never work, and now that he has messed up, they will mock him and say, “I told you so”
    “All the lonely shadow dances
From the cradle to the grave”
From when it starts to when it ends, in love, all of us are lonely, in a sense, having to figure everything out on our own.
    “It’s a solo song
And it’s only for the brave”
‘Brave’ could be synonymous with ‘proud’… the type of love and relationship that Louis is talking about can only be handled by people who are ‘brave’ and ‘proud’ of themselves.

If you ask me, the whole song has a feel of the artist talking about an LGBTQ+ relationship. It’s “only for the brave”, only for those who are brave enough to accept their sexuality and be proud of it. I’m not saying all this is true… this is my opinion on what the song could be about.

  8. mehrunissah says:

we aren’t making everything about Larry. This song is about louis. His own sexuality. Obviously he came out in this song. What is “church of burnt romances” supposed to mean otherwise?? We need to love and support him no matter what. This is what he is asking for “pour mercy, mercy on me”. CAN ANTIS STOP HATING ON LARRIES FOR A MOMENT AND LEAVE US TF ALONE??!

I’m sorry for my english, it isn’t my first language:))

  9. gigi says:

ok i think this is about his sexuality, and this is why:

-“pour mercy, mercy on me”, this line could be about how he wants forgiveness, he wants to stop hurting because of something he has done. it could be begging for forgiveness from god (as later in the song churches and prayers are mentioned), as many Christians still believe homosexuality is wrong.

-“set fire to history”, again trying to get rid of the past. he wants to get rid of something that (maybe) he has done. in the bible, fire is a metaphor for trials that enter a believer’s life, which could mean that he has been confronted by the fact that he might not be heterosexual. he wants to put this ‘trial’ in the past. it can also be seen as god’s anger and judgment, meaning that he is being judged by god for being homosexual and begs for forgiveness. it also could be that the ‘history’ he is talking about is past heterosexual relationships that he wants to forget about.

-“i’m breaking my own rules”, this could have many meanings but i interpret this as being about his sexual orientation. most people are brought up learning that being heterosexual is the norm, and that other sexualities aren’t normal. this line sounds like he had rules for himself (being heterosexual) but he’s breaking them. and it shows that he feels guilty for it, he’s breaking his own rules.

-“i’m crying like a fool”, this could be interpreted literally or figuratively. literally it could be talking about coming to terms with your sexuality. many people find it hard to accept themselves and cry about it, crying about the realization that you aren’t fitting your rules. it’s completely normal to feel this way when your whole life you’ve thought differently. you feel like you’re betraying yourself. the word fool insinuates that he feels like he shouldn’t be crying. maybe blaming himself for what he feels like in that moment.

-“tall stories on the page”, a tall story is a story that is hard to believe or exaggerated. ‘on the page’ could mean in articles. this line could mean how he sees articles about himself that are exaggerated and false.

-“short glories on the fade”, in his song ‘just like you’ he says ‘you only get half of the story, the cash and the cars and the glory’. this could mean that this line is referring to short moments where everything is going well, career wise or personally, but they only last a small amount of time.

-“i’ve been close enough to touch but i never care for love”, this could have two meanings. one is that this song is about him not wanting to be in love, or not being able to. the other meaning this could have is to do with sexuality. he’s ‘been close enough to touch’ women in his life, but he ‘never cares for love’, meaning that he doesn’t want to be romantically involved with women.

-“it’s a church of burnt romances”, the mention of ‘church’ is quite significant as many people who are Christian still believe that homosexuality is wrong. relating back to the line about ‘setting fire to history’, it could mean that the church is filled with burnt (by the fire) heterosexual romances. it almost gives a sense of arrogance, almost a sense of irony.

-“and i’m too far gone to pray”, this once again related back to the fact that Christians still believe that homosexuality is wrong. this line means that he’s too far gone to still be able to pray to god, he isn’t going back to being heterosexual no matter what people say. it’s almost also saying that because he’s homosexual he isn’t allowed to pray, as in god won’t let him pray because he’s gone and become homosexual, even though he’s begging for forgiveness.

-“it’s a solo song”, this could mean that he’s scared of love. either just because he’s scared of commitment or because he’s scared because he’s homosexual. he’s scared of what people will think. it could also mean that this song is about him finding who he is, finding his sexuality. that his sexuality has nothing to do with anyone else. he found his sexuality himself, and it will always be his business.

-“and it’s only for the brave”, this could be valid for a heterosexual relationship, especially in the world that he lives in. having to constantly be careful when going out in public, trying to not let internet hate get to him and his ‘girlfriend’, but this line next to the rest of the song doesn’t make sense for it to be about a heterosexual relationship. to me it shows that he realizes the challenges that come with coming to terms with your sexuality. he realizes that he has to be brave, for his partner and for himself. in this context i think he’s talking about himself, a ‘solo song’ that’s ‘only for the brave’. he realizes the challenges that come with homosexuality, and he knows he has to be brave.

-“if the truth tell, darling you fell”, this line is not as straight forward as some of the other ones. the point of view of the song changes at this point, going from the ‘i’ form to the ‘you’ form. this suggests that he’s singing about someone else. the way i interpret this is that he sees the ‘darling’ in question as an angel, they ‘fell’ from the sky. it could also mean that the ‘darling’ fell for him. the darling is in love with him and he doesn’t know how to react since before he was saying it’s a solo song. the ‘if the truth tell’ could mean that he can’t believe it. he can’t believe someone has fallen in love with him, as if he’s saying ‘if what i’ve heard is true, you’ve fallen’. the ‘darling’ in question could be harry, considering that he uses the word ‘darling’ in too young.

-“like there ain’t enough dying starts in your sky”, i interpret this as louis telling the ‘darling’ that he doesn’t understand why they fell in love with him. the ‘dying stars in your sky’ meaning that every time someone oppresses the ‘darling’ for being homosexual, a star dies in their sky, and that falling for louis will just make it worse. he says ‘like there ain’t enough’, meaning that the ‘darling’ is already hurting so much, having their world darkened around them, and yet they’re still falling for louis even when they know how bad they’re already hurting.

-“it’s a tall tale”, similar to ‘tall stories’ earlier can mean an unbelievable or exaggerated story. this could be referring again to the articles or this time about the fact that he can’t believe the ‘darling’ has fallen for him. he can’t believe that even though it will put the ‘darling’ through hell they’ve still fallen for him.

-“and it’s only hello, hello, no goodbye”, this could mean that it was a short story. either that he had to cut off or that had to be forcibly cut off. it could mean that the ‘darling’ fell for him (‘hello, hello’) and either they were told ‘no’ or he said ‘no’ which lead to a ‘goodbye’.

-“pour mercy, mercy on me”, he repeats this line, which marks its significance. once again asking for forgiveness.

-“i’ll fall upon my knees”, this relates to praying, in church people often pray on their knees. this could mean hell do anything for forgiveness. he’ll pray to god on his knees for forgiveness. also falling to your knees is a symbol of begging. this could once again be him begging for forgiveness for being homosexual. it doesn’t mean that he necessarily is religious. the religious connotations are to symbolize how he feels, he wants forgiveness. it could even mean that he wants forgiveness from himself, he blames himself for being homosexual but he know he shouldn’t and he’s begging to be able to forgive himself.

-“and they’ll say, ‘i told you so’, come on when you know you know”, this to me is once again very obviously about homosexuality. it’s about doubting yourself. he doesn’t want to believe that he’s homosexual, once again he blames himself for it. but people around tell him ‘i told you so’, meaning that even though he might not have come terms to the fact that he’s homosexual straight away, everyone else knew. and the line ‘come on when you know you know’ shows that no matter how hard he tries to push the feelings away, when you’re homosexual you’re homosexual. almost meaning that deep down he always knew, but tried to push those feelings away and once we realized people said ‘i told you so’.

-“all the lonely shadow dances”, a shadow dancer is a someone dancing on their own. this is about all the lonely dances he’s had, the ‘dances’ not necessarily being literal dances. this also relates to his walls music video where there are heterosexual couples dancing all around him and he’s alone. his whole life he’s had to be alone, at least in the public eye.

-“from the cradle to the grave”, this is joined with the last line, meaning that all the lonely dances he’s had are going to last from the day he was born till the day he dies.

-“it’s a solo song and it’s only for the brave”, the repetition of this line shows its importance. it shows that no matter what, coming his sexuality has made him realize that it’s his own battle and he has to be brave.

    • gigi says:

      i’ve made a better version:

      only the brave analysis

-“pour mercy, mercy on me”, this line could be about how he wants forgiveness, he wants to stop hurting. it’s could be begging forgiveness from god (as later in the song churches and prayers are mentioned), as many christians still believe homosexuality is wrong. it could also be him begging himself to be able to forgive himself.

-“set fire to history”, he wants to get rid of something that he has done, or wants to get rid of the guilt he feels. in the bible, fire is a metaphor for trials that enter a believer’s life, which could mean that he has been confronted with the fact that he isn’t heterosexual. he wants to put the ‘trial’ in the past. it can also be seen as gods anger and judgment, meaning that he is being judged by god for being homosexual and begs for forgiveness. he could be talking about begging himself for forgiveness, trying to stop judging himself. it could be seen that the ‘history’ he is talking about is last heterosexual relationships that he wants to forget about.

-“i’m breaking my own rules”, this could have many meanings but i interpret it as it being about his sexual orientation. most people are brought up learning that being heterosexual is the norm and that other sexualities are not normal, in some instances even making you feel ashamed for not being heterosexual. this line sound like he had rules for himself (being heterosexual) but he’s breaking them. and it shows again that he feels guilty about breaking his own rules that he’s lived by for so long.

-“i’m crying like a fool”, this could be interpreted literally or figuratively. literally it could be taking about coming to terms with your sexuality. many people find it hard to accept themselves and cry about it (which is completely normal) and cry about the realisation that you aren’t fitting your rules. psychologically it’s painful and many people struggle with being confident and proud in their sexuality, the feeling of betraying yourself is overwhelming. the word fool insinuates that he feels like he shouldn’t be crying, blaming himself for what he feels like in that moment. he feels as though crying in this situation isn’t normal.

-“tall stories on the page”, a tall story is a story that is fake or exaggerated. ‘on the page’ could be referring to articles. this line could mean how he sees articles that are wrong about him, about his fake relationships with other women that are all over the news.

-“short glories on the fade”, in his song ‘just like you’ he says ‘you only get half of the story, the cash, the cars and the glory’. ‘short glories’ could be referring to the moments where everything is going well thanks to money, only last a small amount of time.

-“i’ve been close enough to touch but i never care for love”, this could have two meanings. one is that this song is about him not wanting to be in love, or emotionally not being able to. he doesn’t ‘care for love’, he doesn’t care about being in love. the other meaning this could have is to do with sexuality. he’s ‘been close enough to touch’ women in his life, but he ‘never cares for love’, meaning that he doesn’t want to be romantically involved with a woman the same way he wants to be romantically involved with a man.

-“it’s a church of burnt romances”, the mention of ‘church’ in quite significant as many people who are christian still believe that homosexuality is wrong. relating back to the line about ‘setting fire to history’, it could mean that the church is filled with burnt homosexual relationships. it almost gives it a sense of irony, like the judgment of god burnt them down but yet they’re still in a church.

-“and i’m too far gone to pray”, this once again relates back to that fact that some christians still believe homosexuality is wrong. this line means that he’s too far gone the opposite direction of god that he can’t pray to god anymore. it’s saying that because he’s homosexual he’s not allowed to pray to god anymore, but he’s begging for forgiveness.

-“it’s a solo song”, this could mean that he’s scared of love, either just because he’s scared of commitment or because he’s scared of judgment. it could also mean that this song is about him finding who he is, finding his sexuality, that his sexuality has nothing to do with anyone else, he’s found his sexuality himself.

-“and it’s only for the brave”, this could be valid for a heterosexual relationship, especially with the lifestyle he lives in; having to constantly be careful when going out in public with his girlfriend, trying to ignore internet hate, but this line next to the rest of the song doesn’t make sense. to me it shows that he realises the challenges that come with coming to terms with your sexuality. he realises that he has to be brave, for his partner and for himself. in this context i think he’s talking about himself; a ‘solo song’ that’s ‘only for the brave’. he accepts the challenges that come with homosexuality, and he knows he has to be brave.

-“if the truth tell, darling you fell”, this line isn’t as straight forward as some of the other ones. the point of view changes at this point in the song, going from the ‘i’ form to the ‘you’ form. this suggests that he’s singing about someone else. i interpret this line in two ways: one is that he sees the ‘darling‘ in question as an angel that ‘fell’ from the sky. the other is that the ‘darling’ fell for him. the ‘darling’ fell in love with him and he doesn’t know to react. the ‘if the truth tell’ could mean that he can’t believe it. he can’t believe someone has fallen in love with him, as if he’s saying ‘if what i’ve heard is true, you’ve fallen’. the ‘darling’ in question could be harry, considering the fact that he uses the word ‘darling’ in too young as well.

-“like there ain’t enough dying stars in your sky”, i interpret this as louis telling the ‘darling’ that he doesn’t understand why they fell in love with him. the ‘dying stars in your sky’ meaning that every time someone oppresses the ‘darling’ for being homosexual, a star dies in their sky, and that falling for louis will just make it worse. he says ‘like there ain’t enough’, meaning that the ‘darling’ is already hurting so much, having the dying stars darken their world around them, and yet they’re still falling for louis even when they know they’re hurting.

-“it’s a tall tale”, similar to ‘tall stories’ earlier, it can mean an unbelievable or exaggerated story. this could be referring again to the articles or this time to the fact that he can believe this ‘darling’ has fallen for him. he can’t believe that even though it will put the ‘darling’ through hell they’ve still fallen for him.

-“and it’s only hello, hello, no goodbye”, this could mean that it was a short story, that he cut off or that was forcibly cut off. it could be that the ‘darling’ fell for him (‘hello, hello’) and either they were told ‘no’ to their homosexual relationship or he said ‘no’ because he was scared which lead to a ‘goodbye’.

-“pour mercy, mercy on me”, he repeats this line which marks its significance. once again asking for forgiveness, from people around him or himself.

-“i’ll fall upon my knees”, this could relate to praying; in church people often pray on their knees. this could mean he’ll do anything for forgiveness. he’ll pray to god on his knees for forgiveness. falling to your knees is also a symbol of begging. this could once again be him begging for forgiveness for being homosexual. it doesn’t necessarily mean he is religious. the religious aspects in this song could be a metaphor. the religious connotations are to symbolise how he feels, he wants forgiveness. many christians who firmly believe that homosexuality is wrong, and yet find themselves feeling things for the same gender will pray to god for forgiveness. in this he’s doing the same but maybe to himself or people around him, he could be blaming himself for being homosexual and he’s begging his brain to forgive himself, he’s feeling self guilt. he’s begging to be able to forgive himself for being homosexual and accept himself.

-“and they’ll say ‘i told you so, come on when you know you know’”, this to me again is clearly about homosexuality. it’s saying that no matter how hard you try to ignore your feelings if you’re homosexual, you’re homosexual. it’s about doubting yourself. he scared to accept the reality, to accept himself for being homosexual, as said before he’s begging for forgiveness, he blames himself for it. but people around him tell him ‘i told you so’, which means that even though at first he might not have come to terms with his sexuality himself, everyone knew and once he realised himself people said ‘i told you so’. the second part, ‘come on when you know you know’, means that no matter how hard you try to believe you’re not homosexual, no matter how hard you try to push the feelings away, deep down you always know.

-“all the lonely shadow dances, from the cradle to the grave”, a shadow dancer is someone dancing on their own. this is about all the lonely dances he’s had, the ‘dances’ not necessarily being literal dances, but more moments in his life where he’s been lonely. this also links to his ‘walls’ music video where there are heterosexual couples dancing around him while he’s alone on the target. his whole life he’s had to be alone, at least in the public eye, because of his homosexuality. the ‘cradle to the grave’ shows that these lonely dances he’s had are going to last from the day he was born till the day he dies. it’s almost saying that loneliness follows him around.

-“it’s a solo song and it’s only for the brave”, the repetition of this line shows it’s importance. it shows that no matter what, coming to terms with his sexuality has made him realise it’s his own battle to fight, and he has to be brave.

Its like you’re in my brain. This is almost exactly everything I thought about every line. You’re 100% correct in my opinion. Thanks for adding this interpretation to the comments.

Hats off to you man! The most accurate and precise interpretation. You’ve made this song much more beautiful for me now.

Harry should’ve said “JOHANNA HE’S GAY” or “ANNE I’M GAY” not tina she’s gay.

  11. Anonymous says:

ok bro people are actively choosing to ignore all the larry proof and honestly it low-key feels like homophobia by supporting heteronormality to such an extent that you don’t even consider the meanings of things, that things are automatically straight because that’s easier for you to handle 🙂

    • Anonymous says:

ThAts HoMoPhObiC” it really is not. Its simple, not everything is about Larry. This song may be (I believe so) about his sexuality. Still, that doesn’t mean it has anything to do with Harry. This song is about Louis himself.

      • Anonymous says:

Yes yes yes yes yes yes. Couldn’t have said it better myself.

      • Florence says:

I agree, but what we mean when we say it feels kind of homophobic is that many antis or solo stans (or whatever, I don’t really now the terminology) believe in all the stunts like Louis and El, Harry and Olivia, Harry and Kendall and so on but kind of neglect and avoid Louis and Harry.

It is SOOO obvious how fake the stunts are because they are literally like every other classic stunt.
They are basically PR relationship 101. And at the same time, there are so many Larry proofs and we keep getting more and more but they still choose to neglect and avoid it.

You support the heterosexual relationships while not even giving the homosexual one any kind of thoughts.

        That’s systemic homophobia!

        Have a great day :))

  12. larry is more so f***ing true than ur friends says:

im not saying to make everything about larry but this song is definetly about larry (now if u want me to prove larry is true i can do that too just reply to this comment)

  13. Remi says:

why couldn’t y’all just respects each others opinions and agree to disagree instead, i mean like there have been several times where BOTH Louis and harry have blocked antis and other disrespectful people, and (me being a Larrie) i’m not saying that there isn’t toxic larrie’s cause there is, i just don’t think that either Louis or harry would want their fans to bash each other, cause even at the end of the no matter what y’all believe, they are still band mates and have respect for each other.

I think it’s a metaphor for being gay. Plain and simple. To me, the line “It’s a church of burnt romances, and I’m too far gone to pray” is a reference to how most religious people view homosexuality with the whole “loving someone of the same sex is a sin” aspect. It’s basically saying “you can’t pray away the gay” which is true. Thats why he says this song is only for the brave. He isn’t suggesting that you need to be brave to be in love, but that you need to be brave to love who you’re “not supposed to”. Why else would he be saying “pour mercy mercy on me” if the song wasnt aimed for that “cant pray away the gay” mindset? The song simply wouldn’t make sense if it were for love IN GENERAL rather than loving someone of the same sex.

Seeing the comments above, I just want to say that none of you or me is either right or wrong. The artist has his own meaning to the songs He makes. We just interpret it as how we would like and how we really see it. I’m a Larry, no debate about that. As much as I really want them to come out or be actually true TRUE, we can never really have the final say, Only the people involved. So, until everything is cleared up, I would like to encourage everyone to respect the artists, the music they make (individually), let us respect them as Individuals.
Always have FAITH IN THE FUTURE and TREAT EVERYONE WITH KINDNESS, Love.

    • Danner says:

Honestly, I just want them to be happy no matter what. I’m definitely a Larry. But, have you noticed that Larry is normally what people call themselves because they like the ship but don’t actually think they were together and Larries are when people who believe they were and are together and there previous relationships were staged? I personally forget about the difference, but, if you have seen the recent larry proofs from Loui’s Tour, he has pointed to a sign that said “Sing Walls if LARRY is real”….we all know it’s the managements fault it’s been so hard for them, so maybe he pointed at that sign saying he wishes he and Harry could be together too…GOD DAMN IT I HATE THE MANAGEMENT!!! THEY RUINED THEM!!!!! Cuz who knows if they were actually together. Idk what I believe…but I do believe they have something big between them and I’m all for it. Only for the brave, along with all of his songs explains that, but all I want is for him to be happy 😊

      • Love you Larry says:

I really really wish OneD comes off hiatus! And now that Harry and Louis are global icons and they do not have to fear anyone, they finally announce the truth that LARRY IS AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN REAL. It makes me heartbroken to think that they both have lived such a large part of their lives being in the closet. They deserve to be happy, not just fake happiness like with Eleanor and Olivia. They deserve to be with their true loves. God! Please make my wish come true. Imagine how amazing would it be when Louis and Harry kiss in front of everyone, unafraid and stronger than ever.

  18. I can't even pick a nameeeeeeeeee (I wanna sleep and never wake up🙃) says:

Ok but in a world that romance had always been considered as “a girl and a boy” , this song can’t be about “I’m a boy and I luv Eleanor ma girlfriend the one that I went to Amsterdam without (but eh I did oopsy) and I’m singing this song cause i wanna be with her forever but larries are ruining me relationship with me new wife. I wanna be brave and propose to her”.🤧
I’m not saying this song is about larry (which I believe many songs are cause c’mon PRINCESS PARK ? did he lived with Eleanor there ? no I mean yeah apparently E and L had a house date in princess park and that was when they said the 3 little words and in the meantime Harry was in his room there, planning how he is going to propose to Olivia with Shakespeare years later yeah so they came so far that was what happened ObViOuSlY 👀 wOt a coincidence ) but I can certainly say that It is about lgbtq + community
And please don’t say larry was nothing cause it described love to me 🌈
but let’s respect each other cause no one here actually knows the truth

  19. Delia says:

I 1 million percent believe in Larry. I’ll only stop believing if Louis gets engaged/ married to El. I mean they are heading into their 30’s now so it’s time to settle down soon. Let’s see what happens but I recently went to one of Louis gigs in Dubai and he was pointing at some signs that were to do with Larry and smiling! If he didn’t want people believing in it then why would he do that?! 💙💚

So My question is. If the song was supposed to be for Liam Gallagher how would that change your feeling about the song. There would be a totally different interpretation of it besides it being for LGTBQ community
