“Painkiller” by Ruel

In “Painkiller”, singer Ruel is apparently referring to his woman as his “painkiller”.  This is his way of saying he finds relief via her company in a hostile world or more specifically when his “brain gets bitter”. Indeed we can see that his “teenage” life is filled with “heartbreaks” and “headaches”. In fact most of the lyrics of this song paint a pretty-bleak picture of his overall existence, with Ruel’s doctor ‘diagnosing’ him with “sh*t days” and “mistakes”.  Indeed the music video to the track finds Ruel rocking in what appears to be a nuclear-fallout shelter, ultimately disintegrating.

However despite this unfavorable predicament, the singer is well under the impression that he “will be fine”. This is due to him possessing a “painkiller” to help alleviate this anguish. So even though getting over his ‘misery’ appears to be a long, arduous process, it is at least achievable so long as this person ‘keeps him close’.

Again the exact nature of his relationship with this individual is never specified. However, all things considered, it would most-likely be referencing a romantic interest.
