“Shame” by TV Girl

“Shame” is a somewhat complex song by TV Girl. The title is derived from the line which dominates the chorus, which is “it’s a shame” or more pointedly “it’s a crying shame”. But the listener must read in-between the lines in terms of ascertaining what “it” is, and coming to that conclusion is open to interpretation.

All lyrics considered, what Brad Petering may be getting at is the vulnerability which is part of parcel of being in love. The lyrics are not overtly romantic, but the first verse and beginning of the second verse gives the impression that the vocalist is singing to someone he’s smitten by or, in the very least, a close friend that he greatly admires.

So based on this theory, the “crying shame” wouldn’t be falling in love in and of itself but rather when such relationships unwantingly fall apart. And as perhaps being implied by the latter half of the second verse, TV Girl is attributing such a phenomenon to basic human weakness.
