The titular phrase “stay awake”, as used throughout this track, is somewhat synonymous with “holding on”. Lewis wants his partner to hold on to the relationship despite the fact that she has already decided to leave him.

Lyrics of the song "Stay Awake"

The setting of the song is basically a home they are sharing. Currently it is filled with boxes containing her belongings as well as representing “all (their) memories”. Lewis’ girlfriend is about to bounce, as in leave the relationship. However, as she is making her way out the door, Lewis’ “hand starts to slip”, and he feels a way he never felt before. That is to say he is not cool with breaking up.

All in all, the song is based on him entreating her to “stay awake”, which reads more or less like an appeal for her to remain mentally-vested in their relationship.
