“Never Really Loved Me” by Kygo & Dean Lewis
The addressee of “Never Really Loved Me” is obviously a romantic interest, and what this narrative centers on is the point in her relationship with the vocalist whereby the latter has come to admit to himself that their union doesn’t seem to have a future.
The title would further imply that said realization is primarily based on Dean Lewis coming to the conclusion that his significant other “never really loved” him, but the lyrics themselves don’t harp on such a concept. Rather, more honestly explained, the vocalist comes off as sort of a bitter and possibly jilted ex. For instance, in the chorus, he laments having “wasted moments” with the addressee that now he “can’t get back”.
And in the second verse, Lewis also seems to insinuate that his personal future looks more promising without her in his life than it did when she was in tow.
Moreover, the first verse and pre-chorus indicate that he may have been dumped, or in the very least that the addressee came to the aforementioned conclusions even before Dean did.
So part of this whole tirade on the part of the vocalist is that the addressee never loved him to begin with. All things considered, that probably isn’t true. Instead, it reads like this romance is a troubled one that she grew fed up with before Dean himself. But being that the vocalist is the one who feels jilted making such an assertion, that his partner’s love was never true, is sort of a common reaction to such rejection.
The Collaboration
This is the first collaboration between Dean Lewis, a singer from Australia and Kygo, a DJ (i.e. producer) from Norway. They have both proven really successful in their respective parts of the world, but as it currently stands Kygo, whose been in the game notably longer than Dean, can be considered more famous on a global scale.
