From the lyrics, it is beyond clear that Lewis wants his girlfriend back. He wants the relationship to stay alive because it means a lot to him. However, his girlfriend (or rather former girlfriend) feels differently. She’s no longer interested in him and the relationship.

As he wallows in sorrow, a friend of his tries giving him some help through a good advice. He tells Lewis to face reality. He should accept that the relationship is over. He should therefore “let her go” and stop killing himself with thoughts of her. He then assures him that everything is going to be alright and at the end of the day he shall smile again.

It’s his mates cigarettes on the counter, that can’t be overlooked. Is it the same mate that is giving him advice?

    • Dean Lewis says:

Mate giving him advice is a friend, close friend or maybe best friend not the mates that banged the girl lol

      • Nick Taylor says:

lol, i believe she was struggling with addiction and he didn’t know what to do and his friend told him that it was over with her but he was in denial and stuff so now he is regretting what he did but she seems like she is handling the break up fine and when she gets with another guy he feels betrayed

I know I was thinking that too

I think it is not meant to be advice at all. He finds out that his girl cheat with his friend, and the “friend” said to give her up because she does not love him anymore. It is a double betrayal.

  2. Hope Mitchell says:

I don’t get it. Why were his mate’s cigarettes on the counter?
And, also, I can relate to the song. I love the song and his voice.

i dont understand the ‘cigarettes on the counter weren’t ur friends, they were my mates’
    can someone explain that

    • Anonymous says:

She lied and said a friend was smoking cigarettes with her, when in reality she was smoking with another man (her new boyfriend)

      • Anonymous says:

This is further proven when he says, ‘But it’s not the fact that you kissed him yesterday
It’s the feeling of betrayal, that I just can’t seem to shake’

      • You Don't Need To Know says:

Oh, thank you, i think everyone was struggling with that verse.

    • unknown says:

maybe the part were”the cigarettes on the counter weren’t your friend, they were my mates”means his starting to use some kind of drugs andn can’t stop and help it anymore so he regret it and dewis friend is addict too so the thought if he saw that he will think that the cigarettes (marijuana or something) is from he’s/her friend so his girlfriend told her the truth that it was his mates(dewis girlfriend friend who is smoking weeds or something like cocaine)

I am in love with this song. I take the verse “the cigarettes on the counter there weren’t your friends they were my mates..” as she created on him with one of his friends.

yer her cheating with his friend leaves a bad taste… break an arm or two with a bat, you know to make it right “if you fck a friends gf you deserve broken bones; sure you might still be able to be friends etc, but broken bones is the minimum price for fcking a friends gf”
