“Surrender” by Birdy
“Surrender” finds the narrator (Birdy) apparently addressing a romantic interest, more specifically her ex. He reads like the transient type, if you will, who is unable to truly commit. And said disposition has seemingly contributed to the demise of the relationship. So in response, what Birdy is expressing is her desire to ‘surrender into his arms’. In other words, she wishes that he would simply embrace her love as opposed to being so complicated.
When did Birdy release “Surrender”?
This is the lead single from Birdy’s 2021 album, “Young Heart”. And the song itself came out on 22 January 2021. It was the first song and single to be released from her “Young Heart” album.
Is this a self-penned song?
Yes. Birdy wrote this tune herself. However, in writing it, she received support from Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian. By virtue of this, she and the aforementioned names are credited as the official composers of “Surrender”.
And the producer of the track is James Ford. Ford and Birdy have a long working history. For example, he was responsible for producing her maiden self-titled album, which birthed the following hits:
- “Skinny Love”
- “1901”
- “People Help the People“
Music Video of “Surrender”
The official video (which can be seen above) was directed by one Sophie Muller. Birdy is the only person who appears in the video. Considering the video was shot during the coronavirus pandemic, it is apparent that played a role in her being the only person in the video.
