Meaning of “Battlefield” by Birdy

The “battlefield” Birdy is singing about appears to be what we commonly refer to as the field of romance.  She compares the romantic arena as being akin to “a raging war”. And presumably, what she’s alluding to is how romantic interests can and often do prove to be mercilessly uncommitted.

So along those lines, Birdy is entreating the primary addressee, her significant other, not to abuse her love and trust. The vocalist reads like someone who may be generally fearful in that regard. But that’s because she understands that these days, the concept of all being fair in love has really raged out of control.

“‘Cause out here, it’s a battlefield
No savior, no yield
Out here, it’s a ragin’ war
Is anyone countin’ tears at all?
Out here, it’s a battlefield
We can’t always get what we want”

Birdy co-wrote and co-produced this song with Anya Jones, and its other producer is Bullion.

“Battlefield” is the penultimate track on the playlist of “Portraits”, Birdy’s studio album that was dropped on 18 August 2023.

The label that backed the release of this song is Atlantic Records.
