“Heartbreaker” by Birdy

Birdy’s “Heartbreaker”, as with the three that precede it on the playlist of “Portraits”, seemingly revolves around the vocalist being in a troubled romantic relationship with the addressee. In this particular case, Birdy presents herself as a character who has already concluded that her romance with the addressee must come to an end.

But the symbolic implication is that she’s too blindly in love with him to let go. Therefore, we can conclude that what’s also being implied here is the addressee being the toxic partner in this equation. And that may also be the idea that the title, which is somewhat confusingly used in context, is meant to point to.

“You say one more dance and I always give in
(I don’t know what I’m doing, I don’t know what I’m doing)
I’m falling in your arms trying to save everything
(I don’t know what I’m doing, I don’t know what I’m doing)
Heartbreaker (It was over right from the start)
Heartbreaker (And nothing’s ever gonna be enough)”
