“Donald Trump” by Mac Miller

Donald Trump was actually quite famous for decades before he became President of the United States. And he was known as an astute businessman alright but also largely as a millionaire playboy. Indeed Chris Rock once recounted how the Donald was immensely more popular, amongst girls in a NYC nightclub, than either him, Eddie Murphy or even the late Prince. And considering that Mac Miller dropped this track a considerable time before Trump even entered politics, that is actually the aspect of his personage which he is celebrating.

You see, this song also came out before Miller himself was really famous. And what he is doing is likening his aspiration to “take over the world”, i.e. be mega-successful in his career, to the success that Trump had already experienced. For Trump is also known for being the most-popular real estate holder in New York City. This is a reality which many attribute to his aggressive business nature.

But more lyrical focus is actually put on the ways Mac is using his wealth. And for the most part, he seems to really enjoy the company of fast women. Indeed he notes how the same ladies who previously paid him no mind are now ‘on his d**k’ since he’s become famous. And of course, it wouldn’t be a true Mac Miller sound without a few references to getting high and intoxicated. And overall the track relays what can best be described as a party-like atmosphere.

And considering that this is before Miller himself got rich, he’s not able to really brag literally about being paid. But he does make it known that such is his goal, primarily in the name of having a good time. And he is also, even this early in his career, acknowledging the annoying presence of haters.

When was “Donald Trump” released?

This track came out on 8 February 2011 and is featured on Mac Miller’s fifth mixtape, which is entitled “Best Day Ever”.

Writing and Production

Easy Mac wrote it along with the track’s producer, Sap. And the music video to the song had Ian Wolfson as its director.

Donald Trump’s Reaction

As noted above, at the time of this song’s release, Trump served as the most-popular celebrity example of a successful American entrepreneur. Meanwhile this was the first of Mac Miller’s songs to ever blow up, i.e. appear on the Billboard Hot 100. And when it initially became apparent that Easy Mac had a hit on his hands, the Donald publicly acknowledged its success and even dubbed Miller “the new Eminem”, which Mac himself appreciated.

However, as time progressed and the track eventually went Platinum, the Donald began demanding royalties for the usage of his name in true Trump fashion. This did not sit well with Miller, who then got into it with Trump. But eventually Donald tried to dead the matter by further congratulating the continued track’s success. However, Mac apparently wasn’t the type to forgive and forget. Or in the very least he was not digging the idea of Trump actually becoming President of the United States, as he still went on to vehemently diss him during his presidential campaign.

Success of “Donald Trump”

As aforementioned this was the first Mac Miller track that made it onto the Billboard Hot 100. On this prestigious chart, it peaked at number 75, in addition to charting in France.

The song also went on to be certified Platinum in the United States and Gold in Denmark.

Donald Trump’s feud with Mac Miller

The cold relationship between rapper, Mac Miller, and politician, Donald Trump, started in 2012. This was when the latter demanded for royalties after the former used his name in a song he released a year before. Initially, Trump heaped lots of praise on the rapper for his work and success. However, things began to change after the politician asked for his share of the money Mac made from the song. This didn’t go well with the rapper who expressed his displeasure and asked Trump not to take glory for the performance of the song.

Trump, nonetheless, responded with a number of tweets in which he threatened lawsuits against the rapper. The two had a go at each other for some time before Miller, prior to the elections in 2016, condemned Trump and asked the public not to vote of the Republican man. In one of his comments on television, Miller openly stated that the situation between the two has left him with nothing but hate for Trump. He further used words such as “attention-thirsty” and “power-hungry” to describe Trump.

After the death of the rapper in 2018, Trump refused to pay tribute to the artist which became a topical issue in America.
