“Treat People with Kindness” by Harry Styles

“Treat People with Kindness” is Harry Styles’ version of an uplifting, feel-good song. The title is actually a slogan the singer has been printing on his concert merch for a couple of years now. And the term “treat people with kindness” is pretty self-explanatory. However, there are other ideas being presented in this song. For instance, it is based more on the concept of an individual putting forth an effort to make himself feel good. And also in terms of relating to others on such a positive note, he espouses that he and the addressee “find a place to feel good”.

But part and parcel of the aforementioned experience also includes ‘treating people with kindness’. And with that being stated, there are also some parts of the song with seemingly off-the-wall lyrics. For instance, in the bridge, Harry puts forth an ideology whereas he and the addressee should remain positive even if their “friends all pass away”. Also in the outro he states that what they “want is automatic all the time”, without indicating what exactly automatic means in this context. But at the end of the day this probably wouldn’t be a true Harry Styles’ song if there weren’t some type of deeply-symbolic lyrics.

And conclusively, the understanding the listener is likely to walk away with is that of the singer feeling good and wanting to make others feel likewise also.
