In this particular song, the singer is brooding over the loss of a particular lady. That is to say that he and the woman he loves have broken up. And the popular theory behind the track is that it is based on a real-life relationship Harry Styles went through. More specifically, there are ample clues pointing to the idea that it is a reflection of his feelings, at least at a particular time, towards one of his ex-girlfriends, Camille Rowe. 

In fact there is a sample of a voicemail which serves as the outro that is theorized to be an actual message Camille once sent to Harry. And the thesis sentiment of “Cherry” is that he misses her, despite the fact that she has already moved on to another man. Indeed her dating someone else has him jealous. 

But this song doesn’t conclude with him stating a desire to have her back. Rather it runs more along the lines of illustrating the singer has indeed lost someone whom he truly cares about. And with that being established, it is not clear how the title of this track actually fits into that narrative. What is known though is that Styles has an affinity for naming things after fruits and commonly references them in his songs.

This song was released on 13 December 2019, by Columbia Records, as the fifth track on the playlist of Harry Styles’ album “Fine Line”.
