“Don’t Call Me Angel” by Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus & Lana Del Rey

In “Don’t Call Me Angel”, the narrators (Ariana Grande, Lana Del Rey and Miley Cyrus) are addressing romantic interests. And what they are telling him, as stated in the title, is not to refer to them as ‘angels’. They are two reasons explicitly given for such. One is that these men cannot actually afford them. And this idea is put forth in a way where it reads as if it may refer to both the material and emotional levels, as in these guys being unable to keep up with them in either of those areas.

But secondly and more to the point is that the ladies are not as sweet as people perceive them to be. Or as they put it themselves, even though they are “fly”, as in belong to an outstanding category above the rest, they’re not “from no heaven”.  Or another way of looking at it is that they are not as tender, passive and innocent as ‘angels’ are supposed to be. Indeed in reality, they come off more or less like female playas in this track. Thus it can be concluded that they’re warning dude against getting all lovey-dovey in order to spare their emotions. In other words, if some guy who is infatuated with them decides to get too close, like referring to them by a word as endearing as “angel”, he may get his feelings hurt.

In all, the singers don’t want to hear overly-romantic or excessively-flattering words from their lovers.

Do the artists appear in “Charlie’s Angels”?

No. None of the singers (Ariana, Miley and Lana) appears in this 2019 version of the “Charlie’s Angels” film. The titular characters are actually played by the following:

  • Kristen Stewart (who plays Sabina Wilson)
  • Naomi Scott (who plays Elena Houghlin)

Possible Inspiration for Song’s Title

Despite none of the artists mentioning it, we strongly suspect the artists got the inspiration for the title of this track from a Chip Taylor penned classic titled “Angel of the Morning“. This song, which first came out in 1968, was made globally famous by singer Juice Newton in 1981.

The line: “Just call me angel of the morning, angel” is arguably the most notable line from “Angel of the Morning”. And we strongly believe that Ariana and her collaborators were inspired by this line/lyric in question.
