Amazon Standing Lamp by Wilbur Soot
Wilbur Soot, the YouTube star / comedic musician, is at it again in that latter regard, having dropped his second studio album, Mammalian Sighing Reflex, on 30 November 2023. And along with that project we got Amazon Standing Lamp, which was both written and produced by Soot himself.
Wilbur’s songs tend to reflect the musings of a young man who faces notable challenges in the field of romance. And such is apparently the case with Amazon Standing Lamp, presuming that the addressee is his significant other.
There are two main sentiments permeating throughout. One is that, due to possessing some type of inner toxicity, the vocalist is such that he tends to drive friends away. Or at least, that’s the way he perceives the loneliness that defines his social life (as implied in the second verse).
Relatedly, it reads as if the addressee is not overly interested in seeing Wilbur, despite his best attempts to have her around. So what’s being further insinuated is that as a result, he has formed a less-than-ideal dependency on alcohol to counteract his emotional discomfort.
The song basically concludes with Wilbur lamenting that “the only light left in (his) life” is “a top-heavy Amazon Basic’s standing lamp”. To note, there are actually such items sold on Amazon, but Soot citing such an object doesn’t particularly like a product placement. Instead, in doing so, he is out to make a point. And that is, due to absence of the addressee in particular, the singer has descended into a funk, one where he feels as if he doesn’t have any meaningful friends.
