“Call Me What You Like” by Lovejoy

It seems as if these days, we are coming across more songs in which the vocalist is expressing romantic dedication to a partner who, under traditional circumstances, would very much be deemed less-than-ideal.

As presented in this case, Wilbur is so smitten that he doesn’t care if his sweetheart is seeing other guys.  Or as put forth in the pre-chorus, he’s not concerned as to how she addresses him, “as long as (she)” actually takes the time out to actually call Wilbur.

That statement sorta implies that perhaps she does verbally abuse the vocalist, who comes off as more or less being a cuck and, as expressed in the bridge, is dealing with psychological issues accordingly. But more to the point, once again, would be the fact that he values her hand nonetheless.

Those who are familiar with the artistry of Wilbur Soot, Lovejoy’s frontman, know that his songs tend to be pretty detailed and also comedic. So it is with this piece also, in which there are some observations being expressed which really take imagination (or perhaps a sound understanding of British colloquialisms) to decipher.

But what it all boils down to is the vocalist being in love with someone whom he seems convinced doesn’t feel the same about him. Yet and still, they are involved in what reads like a physical and likely sexual relationship. And in the grand scheme of his feelings, he is more interested in maintaining that type of association, no matter the losses his self-esteem is taking in the process, as opposed to, say, seeking out a partner who is actually faithful.

“You can kiss the skin
From my lips if it makes you feel good
I’m not sure if you want it
I’m not sure if you need me, too
And you can taste the beer
On every guy that talks to you
But you can’t stay awake forever
No, you can’t stay awake forever”
