“Call You Mine” by Daughtry

The lack of specificity in the lyrics of “Call You Mine” makes them open to interpretation. For instance, it’s hard to ascertain whether or not the singer and addressee, who we would presume are romantic interests, are in an established relationship or one that the vocalist is now trying to initiate. If it is the former, then the lyrics read as if this may be a tumultuous relationship yet one he desires to maintain nonetheless. If it is the latter, then it would be as if he is trying to convince the addressee to take him on as a lover, or something like that.

What is definitively ascertainable though is that as the relationship currently stands, it’s less-than-ideal state in the vocalist’s eyes. In “a different life”, as he puts it, he and the addressee had a more congruent union. So now, even if for whatever reason he may be compelled to “let go”, Chris rather asserts that he will “never walk away” from this relationship.

In other words, it is his vision of that “different life” that is apparently compelling him to stay committed to this relationship more so than the actual reality of it. Or again, something like that.

As implied earlier, venturing too deeply into these lyrics almost feels like descending into a rabbit hole. Indeed somewhat in contrast to all of the above, the title is actually based on the vocalist coming to the final conclusion that he “can’t” actually have the addressee.

All in all

In putting all of the above together, it is possible one thing is happening. And that maybe the case of Chris Daughtry playing the role of a guy who has lost his girlfriend but is unable to accept the fact. In his heart, he knows that she ‘can’t be his’. But in his mind, he can’t give up on the relationship nonetheless.
