The singer recalls that in the good old days, the status of country music was not bought but was acquired through dedication and hard work. He expresses that the so-called mediocrity stems from the fact that modern country singers hardly write on their own. He references legendary country artists such as Johnny Cash and Haggard who were both part of the “Outlaw movement”. He goes on to categorically state that Country Music needs a lead figure and not just a pretty face. And finally, he ends the song by stating his hope that more traditionally original country music finds it way back.

In all, Combs is using this song to share his thoughts on the “sad” state of modern day country music. He is not happy how his beloved genre of music has changed. According to him, it has lost its main essence. He therefore longs for the good old days.
