“She Got the Best of Me” by Luke Combs

Luke Combs uses “She Got the Best of Me” to capture the concept of a person’s first heartbreak which is usually the hardest and its negative effect on future relationships. Here, the narrator appears to have been heartbroken by a girl he fell in love with in his youth.

He explains that he fell deeply in love and got his feelings hurt bad, as young love usually does not consider the consequences of giving your all to a person. In the chorus, Luke claims that this girl took the best parts of him. And owing to that, his future lover might only get to enjoy the rest of the devotion he has (which is obviously not much). The singer also stresses on the fact that although thoughts of his ex, still linger, he has found a way to get over her. He uses metaphors such as six strings to signify that losing her actually drove him to take interest in making music.

Summary

At the end of the day, there is one important message Luke is trying to get across in “She Got the Best of Me”. And said message is about his resolution to never give himself completely to another lover the way he did with his first lover.
