“Circles” by Mac Miller

The concept which this song (“Circles”), as well as the album which is named after it, is based on is the idea of Mac Miller going around in “circles”. Or stated differently, he is not experiencing definitive progress in his life.  Considering other tracks that he has dropped, as well as knowledge of his actual lifestyle, we can say that such a sentiment is at least partially an allusion to his drug habit. But within the confines of this track specifically, it seems as if he is speaking more to a general feeling of depression.

And the song kinda flips during its second half. There, Mac tasks himself with rather trying to make an unidentified addressee he’s spending time with feel better instead. He advises this individual that he or (likely) she should take “one day at a time” as opposed to putting the entire weight of a bleak world on her shoulders.

But this interaction may also be indicative of the ‘circle’ he is caught in. That is to say at times he finds himself the victim of negative thinking, while at others it is up to him to treat this condition in people outside of himself.

So perhaps the permeating theme of this song is intended to be centered on the notion of the world indeed being a depressing place at times.
