“Commitment Issues” by Central Cee

Central Cee’s “Commitment Issues” is sort of your quintessential hip-hop love song. It serves the dual purpose of not only allowing the vocalist to serenade his beloved but also as a vehicle to give us insight into the lifestyle of the vocalist himself.

And in traditional rap-music fashion, Central Cee presents himself as sort of a bad boy, even a womanizer, who sometimes makes mistakes in the field of romance. But of course at the end of the day, it is this woman, the addressee, whom he truly loves. And apparently, the reason he tends to make the aforementioned mistakes is because he has “commitment issues”. Or stated otherwise, he’s somewhat of a novice as far as a genuine monogamous relationship is concerned.

Indeed we see that Central tends to occasionally cheese his boo off when she discovers all of the contacts of “hoes” that he has slept with in his possession. They also tend to argue “too many times” for his liking. For instance, he even spazzed out and called her “a b**ch”, which now has her engaged in violent retaliatory measures.

A Solution

So as a solution he wants to slow things down. This is not to imply that he wants to separate from her or take time off. Rather he once again, rather maturely we can even say, recognizes that he doesn’t really know what he’s doing (i.e. “commitment issues”).

Lyrics of "Commitment Issues"

So the implication is sort of like this is the first time he’s been in love or found a woman he really wants to commit to. Indeed Cee even goes as far as to state that he doesn’t “believe in love”. Perhaps, as with many youth of the day, he didn’t grow up in an environment where steady monogamous relationships are the norm. That’s how he by and large comes off, as someone who isn’t necessarily against love but rather is unfamiliar with it. But that being said, now he has finally met someone whom he wants to ‘take seriously’.

That’s why for instance he’s willing to go the extra mile to purchase items for her which currently he can’t afford. But despite the vocalist perhaps not having enough to buy her the finer things in life, he’s still paid, i.e. on his lucrative (musical) grind. Basically he’s living sort of a superstar lifestyle, and there’s still plenty of “hoes” on call. So there’s like a mixed message being relayed, kinda like he wants to change for his main squeeze but is perhaps too stuck in his ways to do so.

The Addressee

Meanwhile concerning the lady at hand, she is hooked on the rapper because of his bedroom skills. Or at least that is the impression that he’s under – that he puts it on her better than her ex, which is why she won’t go back to dude. And that is also why she remains with Cee despite the discontent in their relationship.

Indeed it is implied, especially considering the last lines of the song, that such contributes to said discontent. Or stated differently, Central may feel as if he is being used for sex, as he is convinced that the selfsame girl doesn’t care how he feels from an emotional standpoint.

Conclusion

So best intentions aside, conclusively we can speculate that this relationship may not last much longer. We have a situation here where the male has commitment issues and tends to fraternize with other ladies. Meanwhile the female doesn’t seem to necessarily have his best interests in mind either.
